The Central Board of Secondary Education (abbreviated as CBSE) functions under the overall supervision of the Controlling Authority which is vested with the Secretary (School Education& Literacy), Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The CBSE Board was constituted in 1962 with the objective of serving the educational institutions more effectively. From 309 schools in 1962 the Board today has 17500 schools including 197 schools in 23 countries. There are 1078 Kendriya Vidyalayas, 2482 Government/Aided Schools, 11443 Independent Schools, 585 Jawahar Novodaya Vidyalayas and 14 Central Tibetan Schools

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are co-educational, fully residential schools up to Senior Secondary level and are located mainly in rural areas. The Navodaya Vidyalaya System is a unique experiment unparalleled in the annals of school education in India and elsewhere. Its significance lies in the selection of talented rural children as the target group and the attempt to provide them with quality education, which would, otherwise, have been deprived of such facilities. Free Education and free Boarding & Lodging have made Navodaya Vidyalaya a unique institute.
Navodaya Vidyalayas aim at inculcating values of national integration through migration scheme though which the inter regional exchange of students between Hindi and Non-Hindi speaking States and Vice-versa takes place for one academic year.
At present 591 JNVs are functioning all over the country. Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas being fully residential institutions, the teachers are required to stay in the Vidyalaya campus for which rent free accommodations as available will be provided. In addition to normal teaching duties, the teachers are required to perform additional responsibilities attached with residential system of schooling like House Mastership, remedial and supervisory studies, organization of co-curricular activities, escorting of students on migration and looking after students’ welfare in general. During the period of probation of the incumbent performance in all these areas is also assessed, in addition to the teaching ability to determine suitability for the job.
In view of the policy that at least 1/3rd students admitted are girls; efforts will be made to post male and female teachers in proportion to the number of girl students in Navodaya Vidyalayas subject to condition that they fulfill the normal eligibility conditions. However, there is no separate reservation for Female Teachers to this effect.
